Get Very Useful Information About Your Computer (Bginfo)
Bginfo is a very handy utility that puts all of the detailed information about your computer on your desktop. I’ve been using it for almost a decade. It is provided free from Microsoft.

Are You Tired of Finding or Getting Your Application CD and DVD disks to put them in and out of your Computer? (ISO Recorder and PowerISO)
A computer user’s environment is getting to a point where everything is electronic. Having physical media like disks to put in a computer is annoying, even if it is just for installation. How would you like to install from a virtual disk representation of your CD or DVD so you never have to use the real disks ever again? That’s what I have- I have all my application disks made into virtual representations that I can load at any time and run just like a real disk at any time. Not only is this extremely convenient, but the virtual disks are also enjoyably fast. I have these virtual disks categorized and stored on a file server as well as my local machine.
Sound good? This is how it works:

Secure File Eraser (Eraser)
Many people ask me how to destroy individual private files on disk and, in particular, how to make sure that their computer disk is completely wiped out of any private information before they sell their computer or give it back to an IT department because they are about to get a new computer.
Many of you know that when you delete a file on your computer, the entire content of the file is actually still present on the disk. This fact has been the source of life changing problems for many who thought they deleted private, sensitive, embarrassing, or illegal information, or just information that they didn’t want anyone to ever find out about. The file was deleted from being accessible easily form the Operating System, but with some special disk tools, voila, the file is retrieved!

Easy File Sharing and File Backup (Dropbox)
Dropbox is very easy to use and provides two wonderful capabilities.
- File Sharing- You can easily share files with others by simply dragging a file on your desktop into the “Dropbox” on your desktop.
- File Backup- Any files you drag and drop into the “Dropbox” will be copied to a remote location on a server for safe keeping AND copied more times to any computer which also logs-in to the same “Dropbox”.
Simple PDF File Maker (Bullzip PDF Printer)
The free Bullzip PDF printer is as good as some of best “pay for” PDF file creators. You can create a PDF file from any application you use. Bullzip appears as a printer in your printer list. All you do is pretend that you are printing to this virtual printer and- voila! you will have a PDF file instead. Be sure to set the image settings to high resolution if you want any images to look their best.

Secure and Private File Maker (PrivateCrypto)
Do you ever need to share a file or files in email, on a USB Flash, or in a public space but you really don’t want anyone else to be able to read or use the files except for persons you select? There are many File Zippers but “PrivateCrypto” is the best for reasons I’ll cover. PrivateCrypto lets you ZIP, encrypt, and password a collection of files and then even make it into a self-extracting EXE.
Adept readers may ask, well what about Winzip and/or 7-Zip since they also provide password and encryption? That’s true but both of these alternates I consider to lack a key capability. They are fine when you want to password protect files on your own computer system. What I don’t like is that if you password protect files in the ZIP file and then send it to someone else, they also need to have Winzip and/or 7-Zip or which ever other special ZIP creator you use. Also, some of you may be aware that there are cracks to unpassword protect these ZIP files.

Free Cell Phone Minutes and Voice to Text to Voice Mails!
This application is the well known Google Voice, but the original version which always calls the same phone number to route all calls. The more recent versions always change which phone number it calls first to route through. What does this mean? It means that if you load this older version, you can set up the single phone number it calls as a “Friends and Family” phone number and USE NO MINUTES for any call in the United States! In reality, the phone calls aren’t completely free because you still need to pay for the minimum monthly subscription, but since you don’t use minutes, you don’t need to pay for anything but the minimum!
Google Voice also comes with Voice to Text for all voice mails. Now the truth is that the converter is often not perfect especially when the person leaving the voice mail has a foreign accent. However, I almost never listen to voice mail anymore because you can quickly see who called and generally what they called about. Additionally, you can see visually multiple voice mails at once which is way faster than listening to each one individually by pressing phone keys.

Photo/Image Editor (Gimp)
Need a photo editor? I always get asked which one to get and if there is a free one. And I always hear “And don’t tell me Adobe Photoshop, because I’m not going to pay for it”. I’ve personally paid for Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, and Fireworks. I find Photoshop nearly impossible to use because I don’t use it frequently enough. Paintshop and Fireworks are very easy to use, but they do cost a little bit of money (under $50 per license).
Gimp is definitely the best free Photo/Image Editor available. Gimp is forever free and, frankly, a large percentage of the rich capabilities of Adobe Photoshop, and pretty intuitive to use. It also supports Photoshops PSD files so you can exchange them with Photoshop users.

Laptop Doesn’t Have a Hotspot? Use Your Smartphone to Access the Web (PDANet)
Even though hotspots are popular and pretty much everywhere you go, there are still places where there is no hotspot, it isn’t working, or the access is too slow to be usable. It is hard to believe that a utility such as PDANet exists and is free to use forever. PDANet allows you to USB tether your Android or iPhone to your laptop and access the web by using your SmartPhone’s data plan. I still have an unlimited data plan, so no problem. Since the SmartPhone usually has data access just about everywhere, you are back in business while listening to everyone else in the establishment complain about the lack of WIFI, or slow unusable WIFI.
PDANet requires an install on your Windows OS as well as your Android. It is very simple to install and use. It does not require hacking the Android in any special way or “rooting” the phone, which voids its warranty. It is just a regular Android application. Again, there is nothing like using a Laptop and being able to access the Web from anywhere at no additional cost!

Remote Access to Your Computer at Home (TeamViewer)
A lot of people ask about this because of the benefit of being able to get home computer files from wherever they are– work, traveling, or at a local hotspot. Remote file access is certainly convenient, but sometimes you need to or want to run an application on your home computer when you are away. Finally, maybe you need to access other computers that are remote, not necessarily at home.
TeamViewer is an absolutely wonderful forever free application that provides this and it even provides addition other very useful capabilities. Its capabilities are impressively as follows:

FTP Client (FileZilla)
FTP Clients are often necessary in business when one corporation wants to share lots of files, large files, and/or securely share files. Many people don’t know which FTP Client to download and use. There are many. Filezilla is very good and will always be free. It also provides drag-and-drop from and to your windows desktop. I’ve found it to be rich enough for all my needs, reliable, and bug free.
